Strategies to Counteract Poverty in Schooling

Poverty is evident in everyday schooling. Students often times can't focus on school because they have larger concerns like food and clothing. It shouldn't be hard to think of a time when you've noticed a student rotating between 2 or 3 outfits to school for the entire year. One way to help these students who need materials are by food or clothing drives at school. To organize something like this you need a box to throw clothes or canned goods in. Something so simple can make a huge difference for a lot of students.
Students Against Hunger
One example of a powerful fundraiser comes from a team called "Students Against Hunger" in North Carolina:
Every fall, thousands of students of all ages across central & eastern North Carolina join to help us collect food and funds as part of Students Against Hunger. Over the past 13 years, students in the area have donated enough to provide nearly 3.4 million meals
In 2013, 166 schools participated, collecting enough food and funds to allow us to provide over 381,000 meals."

Letter to the Parents
South Lake High

Dear parents,
The school will be holding a food and clothing fundraiser for students in our school system and surrounding school systems during the month of April.
Preferred Food Items: Any food that doesn’t necessitate much conservation would be greatly appreciated. Some examples would be canned goods or anything that you could store in a pantry.
Preferred Clothing Items: Any clothing that you would dress your own child in would be ideal. Clothing for the colder months is of the greatest concern and is our top priority in this fundraiser.
The front entrance will take any drop offs to the school in one of two containers labeled “Food” or “Clothing.” ANY and ALL donations are greatly appreciated!
Sincerely,
Principle James
